An ice cellar was hidden under the artificial hill. Ice from the park's ponds was stored here well into the summer. Later, the cool room was even used for mushroom cultivation. So the romantic setting also had very practical purposes.

The statue was created in 2003 by the sculptors Andreas Krämmer and Holger Lassen and commemorates Alexandrine of Prussia (1803–1892), who became Grand Duchess of Mecklenburg-Schwerin through marriage. Since then, the ornate bronze figure riding a horse dominated the image of Alexandrinenplatz – until May 12, 2024, when it was severely damaged in a tragic traffic accident. A vehicle drove at high speed across the roundabout, knocking the statue off its pedestal and causing significant damage.
