The gatehouse was built in the late 15th century. Through the construction of the castle at that time, the main access to the castle, previously located in the west, could no longer be used, thus making this access from the north necessary. Drawbridges were built over both moats, which were up to 6 m deep. The inlets in the gate vaults, of the gatehouse and the main gate to the inner bailey, through which the raised bridges were integrated into the wall, still exist. The gatehouse was originally built in timber-frame construction with hardwood and stone infill. Four, perhaps even six, toilet oriels, which also served defensive purposes (boiling pitch or water), were attached to the outer fronts. The rooms of the gatehouse served as living quarters and guardrooms for the castle guards. [ Source: Information board on site ]

The quarry is impressive and a sight to behold. The hiking trail along the meadow next to the quarry is not recommended in summer.
