Cottbus is an independent city with approximately 95,000 inhabitants in Lower Lusatia. This makes it the second most populous city in the state of Brandenburg after Potsdam, and, along with Brandenburg an der Havel and Frankfurt (Oder), one of the four major urban centers of the state. Cottbus is a service, sports, science, and administrative center with an Olympic training center, the Cottbus State Theatre, and the Cottbus campus of the Brandenburg University of Technology. In the sporting arena, the city is known for the Tournament of Champions in artistic and artistic gymnastics, as well as its successful cycling program. Nearly one in five Cottbus residents is active in one of the approximately 140 sports clubs. Considering its size, Cottbus boasts a large number of parks and green spaces, such as Branitz Park, created by Prince Pückler. Although only a small Sorbian minority lives in the city, Cottbus is also considered the political and cultural center of the Sorbs in Lower Lusatia. Cottbus was first documented in 1156 and, as the largest city in Lusatia today, has been under Brandenburgian and Prussian rule almost continuously since the 15th century. Cottbus is located near the Spreewald forest. Source: Wikipedia

The expansion of the railway line between Lübbenau and Cottbus to two tracks is included in the Coal Region Investment Act and is funded by the federal government. The law promotes various measures to strengthen Germany's former coal-mining regions. Lusatia is particularly affected by the impending structural change – here, railway expansion can help generate new economic momentum. Construction of the second track between Lübbenau and Cottbus is scheduled to begin in 2026. Commissioning is planned for the timetable change at the end of 2027. From then on, trains will run from Cottbus to Berlin every 30 minutes. A second track will be laid and a new barrier-free platform will be built at Kolkwitz station as part of the work. More information about the project can be found at: https://www.i2030.de/suedost/.
