Up to the Bürgerpark along the Pfinz diversion canal through the forest. Then to the beer garden, send the kids to the BMX track or to the playgrounds/football pitches. Always a great family outing.

Nice atmosphere and good photo opportunities. Occasionally a bit too many cars, but of course only on the road leading to the restaurant.

Behind easily circumvented barriers, a strip of forest path runs between the partially overgrown Pfin riverbank and Hagsfeld's industrial buildings. The path is beautiful and shady. A wooden bench invites you to rest.

Here lies the "Lusoria Rhenana," a faithful replica of a Roman river warship, which was also used on the Rhine to defend against the Germanic tribes. Can be rented for tours; details can be found on the website of the operating association: https://lusoriarhenana.de

Beautifully located right on the lake with a terrace on the lakeshore. We only had coffee, but we'll be back for dinner. The menu looked tempting.

The Hördt area offers a fantastic selection of traffic-free gravel bike trails, with over 45 routes available. These range from easy, leisurely rides perfect for beginners to more challenging options for experienced gravel bikers.
You'll find a diverse mix of terrain. Routes along the Rhine floodplains and the Hördter Rheinauen nature reserve typically feature flat, expansive compacted gravel paths and dirt roads, ideal for smooth, fast-rolling rides. As you venture towards the Palatinate Forest, the terrain shifts to rolling hills, dense forest tracks, and unpaved paths, offering more varied surfaces and potential elevation gains.
Yes, many of the traffic-free routes around Hördt are suitable for families, especially those in the Rhine floodplains. For a relaxed ride, consider the Roman ship Lusoria Rhenana – Anglerheim Neupotz by the lake loop from Landkreis Germersheim, which is an easy 20 km tour with minimal elevation. Another great option is the Pfinz Relief Canal Section – Tree-lined avenue on Insel Rott loop from Altrhein-Königsee, an easy 32 km route.
Generally, dogs are welcome on most public paths and trails in the Hördt area, especially on the less trafficked gravel routes. However, always keep your dog on a leash, particularly in nature reserves like the Hördter Rheinauen, to protect wildlife. Be mindful of local regulations and other trail users.
The routes offer access to a wealth of natural beauty and interesting sights. You can explore the unique ecology of the Hördter Rheinauen nature reserve with its wetlands and diverse wildlife. Along the Rhine, you might pass the Leimersheim–Leopoldshafen Rhine ferry or the Old Swing Bridge to Rott Island. Further afield, the Palatinate Forest offers mystical forests and red sandstone formations. The Kohlplattenschlag Lake Nature Reserve is another beautiful spot to discover.
While the Rhine floodplains offer expansive views of the river and open landscapes, routes venturing towards the Palatinate Forest will provide more elevated scenic viewpoints. The dense forests and rolling hills of the Palatinate offer picturesque vistas, especially from higher forest tracks. Keep an eye out for clearings and designated viewing spots along the way.
Parking is generally available in and around Hördt, often near trailheads or in village centers. Many routes, like the Pfinz Relief Canal Section – Beach at Grötzingen Quarry Lake loop, start from locations like Hochstetten, which typically have parking facilities. Look for designated parking areas in villages or at popular access points to the nature reserves.
Yes, Hördt and surrounding villages often have bus connections, and Germersheim, a nearby town, has a train station. From these points, you can often cycle a short distance to access the traffic-free gravel trails. Check local public transport schedules for the most convenient connections to your desired starting point.
The beauty of traffic-free gravel trails is that they are generally quiet year-round. However, spring and autumn offer the most pleasant conditions with mild temperatures and beautiful scenery (blossoming in spring, vibrant colors in autumn). Summer can be warm, especially in open floodplain areas, while winter rides are possible but require appropriate gear for colder, potentially wetter conditions.
While many of these routes focus on natural immersion, you'll find opportunities for refreshments in the villages you pass through or near popular attractions. For example, the Sondernheim Brickworks Museum & Beer Garden on the Rhine is a great spot to stop. Many routes also pass by charming local eateries in towns like Germersheim or Leimersheim.
The area is highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 4.4 stars. Reviewers often praise the tranquility of the routes, the diverse landscapes ranging from riverside paths to forest tracks, and the excellent opportunities to explore nature away from cars. Many appreciate the well-maintained gravel surfaces and the sense of freedom these traffic-free trails provide.
Absolutely. While many routes are easy, there are options for those seeking a greater challenge. The Pfinz Relief Canal Section – Beach at Grötzingen Quarry Lake loop from Hochstetten is a difficult 78 km tour with over 700 meters of elevation gain, offering a substantial ride. Another moderate option is the Leimersheim Ferry – Altrhein Leopoldshafen loop from Hochstetten, covering nearly 58 km.
Yes, many of the gravel bike trails around Hördt are designed as circular routes, allowing you to start and end at the same point without retracing your steps. This is particularly true for tours exploring the Rhine floodplains and the Hördter Rheinauen, offering convenient loops through the scenic landscape.
