The building was constructed in the austere form of Kassel Baroque, with two external staircases, a central portal, and a mansard hipped roof. It had an upper floor with living quarters, later used by garrison officers. The courtroom was located in the attic, and the prison was in the basement.

The heart of the “Hofgeismar City Center” quality initiative is in the middle of the city: the newly designed market square. As an extension of the square directly on Marktstrasse, the cozy square forms the “living room” of the old town. The historic town hall, a largely preserved half-timbered ensemble and a fountain monument characterize this urban space, which has gained in amenity value and been strengthened in its functionality through the renovation.

The town owes its nickname "Sleeping Beauty Town" to the Brothers Grimm and their fairy tale "Sleeping Beauty". Not far from the town of Hofgeismar and in the middle of the Reinhardswald forest stands the Sababurg, which is considered the setting of the famous fairy tale. The owner, the state of Hesse, is currently renovating this impressive fairytale castle. It will take some time until the renovation work is completed. We therefore ask for your understanding that the site is currently not freely accessible.
