According to an old tradition, its origin goes back to a citizen of Friedberg who made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land between 1300 and 1350. On his way back, he was taken prisoner by the Turks and vowed to build a chapel modeled after the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem upon his return. Thanks to his fortunate return, he was able to fulfill this promise. The present pilgrimage church was built in 1731.
