Suddenly you are in a fallow deer enclosure: largely unknown. It is a very generous facility - you can spend some time there and watch the animals.

Here, a signpost for the Eco Trail points the way to the castle hill and the old quarry. On the summit plateau of the 440-meter-high castle hill, remnants of a rampart are preserved. Finds from the Neolithic Michelsberg culture (4200 to 3500 BC) and the pre-Roman Iron Age (750 to the birth of Christ) attest to the hill's temporary settlement. From 1904 to 1972, a basalt quarry was operated, providing employment for many men from Großenritte.

Although the bike path runs parallel to the road, you can enjoy a lovely ride past Sonnenhof through the fields to Großenritte or Besse. The paths there are also signposted. It's much nicer than following the main road.

R21 also Chattengau Weg. The Chattengauweg R21 takes you from the cathedral and imperial city of Fritzlar through the basalt dome landscape of the Chattengau to Baunatal. A wonderful tour through the Chattengau in northern Hesse. The Chattengau is the name given to the mostly open landscape between Kassel and Fritzlar, which is characterized by wooded basalt domes. In the east and south it is bordered by the Eder, in the west and north by larger forests. In Baunatal this cycle route leads to the Hessencourrier cycle path and thus enables connections to Kassel and Naumburg (and here to the R4). In Edermünde local cycle paths connect the Chattengauweg R21 with the Eder cycle path, which continues to the Fulda cycle path R1. https://www.naturpark-habichtswald.de/touren/r21-chattengauweg#/article/ca5ee113-993f-430c-96fe-84be38adf52d
