Around 1150, two watchtowers were built on a rocky spur above the Schwarzwasser River to protect the trade routes to Bohemia. The present-day keep and castle stand on this site. From 1555 to 1558, the former castle was converted into a hunting lodge by order of Elector August. Today, the castle houses the municipal museum and cultural institutions, such as the Erzgebirge district's cultural organization, the folk art school, and parts of the Erzgebirge district's adult education center. Next to the castle is St. George's Church, which was built between 1690 and 1699 according to plans by the Lößnitz architect Johann Georg Roth and features a self-supporting ceiling. The interior of St. George's Church is in the Baroque style. Of particular note is the wrought-iron altar screen by the Schwarzenberg master blacksmith Zacharias Georgi. In 1993, a new Eule organ with 36 stops was installed in the church.

Schwarzenberg has four twin towns: Wunsiedel (since 1990), Ipsheim (since 1991 and 1999, respectively), Nové Sedlo (since 2007), and Borchen (since 2007). This fountain with information panels about Schwarzenberg's twin towns is located on Bahnhofstraße. The train station is just around the corner. If you're waiting for a train or bus, you can take a break here on a bench. A few meters further on, there's an ice cream parlor. I like to get an ice cream there and linger here.
