The three-aisled pillar basilica is located on a hill within a walled cemetery. The core of the building, made of whitewashed quarry stone masonry, dates from the middle of the 12th century. The nave and choir were extended to the east in 1832 in medieval style. The unplastered west tower made of quarry stone and bricks was built in 1597. The church belonged to the Dutch-Limburg abbey of Rolduc until 1796, and the place as a whole was, curiously enough, an exclave of the "Spanish Netherlands"!
