As early as 1933, the Ibbenbüren Local History Society established the first city museum on Brunnenstrasse. However, just eleven years later, it was destroyed in World War II and never rebuilt. It wasn't until 2007, when the city was considering selling Haus Herold but no buyer could be found, that the idea of a city museum was revived. Thus, in August 2007, the Friends of the Local History Museum Association was founded and began its work. On November 10, 2007, the city of Ibbenbüren transferred the villa to the Friends of the Museum for use as a museum, and the official agreement was signed on January 23, 2008. Haus Herold has housed the city museum ever since. In consultation with the Ibbenbüren registry office, weddings are also offered here in a historic setting.

Monument to the coal planer invented at the Ibbenbüren mine at Ibbenbüren train station. This first coal planer was tested and used in the Ibbenbüren mine; it already had a similar structure to today's coal planers. The designer Wilhelm Löbbe further developed the coal planer in 1947 for the Altlüner Eisenhütte Westfalia; the so-called "Löbbe planer" was used worldwide.
