The clock was once built by the W. Vortmann tower clock factory in Recklinghausen. That was in 1897. A good 90 years later, in 1988, the Kolping family in Waltrop considered whether they should renovate the clock, which had stood still for about 20 years. Rust had taken its toll on the clock, but it was clear that the clock could be saved. And that's what the Kolpings did. They brought the clock mechanism on a low-loader to the hospital premises, where it could be stored for the time being, and where a group of men met regularly from then on to restore the antique object. And then, on December 8, 1991, on the occasion of Kolping Memorial Day (always on December 4, the anniversary of Adolph Kolping's death), the clock was presented to the public.
