<< Roman Tower >> "Already during ancient times, the Romans built a watchtower on the Balberg in Sonsbeck Switzerland to secure the military road between Vetera (near today's Xanten) and Blerick (Venlo - Netherlands). Later this became a defensive and residential castle for the Klevian counts and Dukes; to this day, however, only the round tower built in 1417 exists, which is called the “Roman Tower” in reference to its prehistory. The “Roman Tower” is a brick building from the beginning of the 15th century and was the mill tower of the state-owned mill, which was already occupied in 1319. The mill was still in operation in 1836." FURTHER INFORMATION: https://www.denkmal-sonsbeck.de/geschichter-rundwanderweg/14-roemerturm/

"... The building “St. However, Katharina did not suffer a loss of importance, but rather underwent a change: the surrounding castle was further expanded and the number of pilgrims even increased. Finally, in 1478, the new pilgrimage chapel was built in honor of Saint Gerebernus and Saint Dymphna by enlarging the former church building. The previous church, including the lower part of the tower, was incorporated into the new one; instead of the previous Romanesque dome, the tower received a Gothic spire that is around 8 meters high. The tuff stone used to build the church came from Andernach, and thanks to generous donations from pilgrims, the church received an attractive interior. In 1605 St. Gerebernus underwent further repairs, for which documents relating to the loan for the work have been preserved. The chapel was essentially spared during the Second World War. The bluestone substructure of the old, original St. Gerebernus Altar, one of two “crawling altars” still in existence in Germany, has been preserved to this day. The substructure has a cavity 98 centimeters high and 78 centimeters wide. The pilgrims crawled through here in order to obtain healing from ailments. The tips of the “Klompen” (wooden shoes) of the pilgrims sliding on their knees are said to have dug into the stone floor there. (Association for Monument Preservation Sonsbeck e.V., 2014.
