The Schwarza has always been one of my favorite rivers for whitewater kayaking. During my time at vocational school in Neunkirchen in the late 1970s, the Schwarza was still full of water. Below Hirschwang, the Schwarza is repeatedly dammed and the water diverted into industrial sewers. Now there is so little water that in the Neunkirchen area and other stretches of the river, the riverbed only carries water during floods. Hydropower can also be overused; a cautionary example can be seen here in Neunkirchen.

The hollow stone is a rounded pebble measuring approximately one cubic meter with an artificial oval hollow. It is likely a sacrificial stone, as names such as Weihfeld, Weihacker, or Weihwiesen appear on the ridge south of the stone. Two legends also exist about this stone... Whether the cross in question actually dates from 1642 cannot be verified. The inscription mentioned is missing today, and written sources are unavailable. In 1499, the "Rechgärtl" was already mentioned as a field name. Its location is curious, as it stands in a shallow, almost level hollow near the Kulmriegel. At that time, numerous finds confirm that a Roman road, the so-called Hochstraße, ran through here. Just a few hundred meters from the Rehgartl Cross, 21 Roman silver denarii were found. It's also pleasant to ride on hot days - cooling shade along the Schwarza ensures a good climate. A rest at the main square in Neunkirchen is recommended!

The natural monument 'Hohler Stein' is also called 'baptismal font' and was declared a natural monument in 1958. According to tradition, baptisms never actually took place here. How did this stone structure come about? Around 4 million years ago, boulders were deposited here and a second stone rotated on top of it - which over time created the depression.

The chapel was built by Carlo and Helene Carniel in 1899. An image of the Virgin Mary that was thought to be lost was the initial spark for building the chapel. The picture was found here on a tree while taking a walk.
