The alternative, obsolete name Kammersee for the lake refers to this castle and thus to the Salzkammergut. The castle, which today lies on a peninsula, originally on an island (with a jetty to the mainland) in the northern Attersee, is a massive, rectangular, three-story building with two low side wings enclosing a courtyard.
