The Ruhr is a 219.3 km long, right and eastern tributary of the Rhine in North Rhine-Westphalia (Germany) with a catchment area of 4485 km² The Ruhr area, the largest agglomeration in Germany, was named after it because the industrialization that shaped the Ruhr area began at the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century on the Ruhr, where hard coal is deposited just below the earth's surface. An important economic significance of the river today lies in the supply of drinking and industrial water to the Ruhr area, for which the Ruhrverband is responsible, as well as in energy generation.

The Harkort power plant, also known as the Wetter power plant, is a hydroelectric power plant on the Ruhr river, slightly below the Harkortsee in the town of Wetter (Ruhr) in North Rhine-Westphalia. It was originally built in the early 20th century to generate energy for a neighboring industrial plant. To dam the Harkortsee, large parts of the old power plant were replaced by a new building in 1931. The current power plant belongs to the Ruhrverband and is operated in conjunction with the RWE Koepchenwerk. The power plant's turbine house is on the list of monuments in Wetter and is a site on the Route der Industriekultur and the Märkische Straße Technical Cultural Monuments.
