The coppice reserve "Galgenberg" provides a suitable habitat for rare bird and insect species. The approximately one-square-kilometer area is characterized by the birch-oak stands typical of coppice management, which are cut back to the stump about every 20 years. This historic form of cooperative forest use is still practiced today and formerly served to obtain tannins and firewood. Near the former execution site, three oak trees, several hundred years old, dominate the landscape. They may mark a historic rest stop on the "Roman Road," an important medieval trade route that runs through the reserve.

The Nutscheid ridge stretches with its extensive forest between the Sieg and Bröl rivers from Hennef to Waldbröl, merging into the Morsbach Uplands towards Siegen. Around the hamlets, expansive meadows and pastures offer sweeping views of the Siebengebirge hills and the Bergisches Land region. At 378 meters, the Hohe Wäldchen (High Wood) is the highest point of the ridge. Numerous historical relics along the trails testify to the Nutscheid's former importance as a transport route for raw materials and goods between the Rhine Valley and the Siegerland region. Traces in the landscape recall medieval customs posts. In Windeck, the ridge trail leads through the Galgenberg nature reserve with its ecologically valuable coppice woodland. The execution site, from which the ridge takes its name, is still clearly visible today; the former location of the gallows is marked by a mighty oak tree. Traces of former military use can also be found in the area around Waldbröl. The nationally renowned "Panarbora" nature adventure park was created in 2015 on the site of a former barracks. Numerous hiking trails lead through the stream valleys and across the heights of the Nutscheid ridge.
