The Obereggersberg Lookout Rock > a Geotope Carved out of the bluff of a bend in the ancient Danube, today's Obereggersberg Lookout Rock was the site of the Eggersberg Fortress for more than 500 years from the 10th century onward. During the White Jurassic period, the present-day Altmühl Valley lay within a warm, shallow sea with reefs and lagoons (tubs) in which limestone was formed. The former sponge reefs, in particular, were then diagenetically transformed into dolomite. When the ancient Danube created today's Altmühl Valley, parts of the sponge reefs were re-exposed. These mostly massive complexes, formed as striking rock formations, now characterize the landscape of the lower Altmühl Valley.
