Haltern am See offers a wide selection of dog-friendly hiking trails. You can find over 170 routes suitable for you and your canine companion, ranging from easy strolls to more challenging hikes through diverse landscapes.
Yes, Haltern am See is very accommodating for beginners and families with dogs. Over 100 of the available routes are rated as easy. The region features many 'LandStreifer' routes, which are circular day tours ideal for those seeking shorter, less strenuous options, typically ranging from 4-6 km. An example is the Sandbach Stream – Sandbach Riverside Path loop, which is a moderate 8.8 km route with minimal elevation.
Haltern am See is rich in natural beauty. You can explore the expansive Halterner Reservoir and the quieter Hullerner Reservoir, both offering scenic paths. The Westruper Heath is another highlight, especially between July and September when it blooms purple. Forests like the Haard provide shaded trails, and you might even pass by the Alte Fahrt between Datteln and Olfen, a historic waterway.
While Haltern am See offers many dog-friendly trails, it's important to note that most hiking areas, especially within the Hohe Mark Nature Park, require dogs to be kept on a leash to protect wildlife and ensure the safety of all visitors. Always check local signage for specific regulations regarding leash laws in different sections of the trails.
Many trails in Haltern am See run alongside the reservoirs and the River Stever, offering opportunities for your dog to cool off. While direct swimming access for dogs might be restricted in certain areas of the main reservoirs (due to their use as drinking water sources), there are often smaller streams and less regulated sections where dogs can safely access the water. For example, routes near the North Shore of Silbersee III might offer more relaxed water access.
Haltern am See is beautiful year-round for hiking with your dog. Spring and autumn offer pleasant temperatures and vibrant scenery, with fewer crowds. Summer is great for shaded forest trails, but be mindful of heat and ensure your dog has plenty of water. Winter can provide peaceful, crisp walks, but some paths might be muddy or icy. The blooming of the Westruper Heide in late summer (July-September) is a particularly scenic time.
Yes, circular routes are a prominent feature of the hiking network in Haltern am See. Many trails, including the popular 'LandStreifer' routes, are designed as loops, allowing you to start and end at the same point. The Haard forest also features over 100 km of new themed circular trails. An example of a longer circular route is the LandStreifer Haltern "Deep mountains, high valleys", a 15.9 km loop.
