In 1733, during the War of the Polish Succession, the great powers Austria and Russia fought against France for the succession to the Polish throne. As the war was waged, among other places, on the Upper Rhine, the Ettlingen Lines from the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-1714) were reinforced here. For this purpose, a five-sided fortification (redoubt) was built here in the winter of 1733/34, 100m in front of the lines. The earthen ramparts surrounding the inner courtyard were ten meters high. There were gun emplacements on the corners of the southern rampart. On May 4, 1734, the French conquered the redoubt and broke through the Ettlingen Lines here.
