Schloss Philippsburg – located at the southern exit of Braubach – was built between 1568 and 1571 on behalf of Landgrave Philipp II of Hesse-Rheinfels as a future widow's residence for his wife Anna Elisabeth, née Countess Palatine of the Rhine. The "defiant" Marksburg, located above, seemed too inhospitable for this purpose to the Landgrave.
