The Zylinderhaus in Bernkastel-Kues is a nostalgia and classic car museum dedicated to German automotive history, offering much more than just a vehicle exhibition. Over 5,000 square meters of exhibition space, spread across three floors, showcase more than 150 classic cars and approximately 100 motorcycles. The collection focuses on German makes, particularly vehicles from the post-war economic boom of the 1930s to the 1980s, including brands such as Audi, BMW, Borgward, DKW, Mercedes-Benz, NSU, Opel, VW, and Wanderer. What makes the Zylinderhaus special is its presentation style. The vehicles aren't simply displayed; instead, they are atmospherically staged in detailed retro settings that capture the spirit of each era. Visitors experience a journey through time, passing through recreated historical shopfronts, an electronics store, a toy shop, and even a replica post office, complete with a parked VW Fridolin. Another highlight is the creatively staged junkyard idyll, which also serves as a crime scene. Besides cars and motorcycles, bicycles with auxiliary motors and toy cars are also on display. The museum opened on October 14, 2017, after collector Bernd Benninghoven acquired the original collection and selectively added further exhibits. The building itself is a purpose-built complex, its facade modeled on Gründerzeit-era architecture. The Zylinderhaus sees itself as an event center focused on German automotive history and, in addition to the museum, offers conference and event spaces for occasions such as weddings and seminars. The museum also features a restaurant with a beer garden, serving regional cuisine and providing a delicious complement to the visit. The museum is generally open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with Monday being the day of rest. The entire facility is designed to be barrier-free.
