For years a regular stop when I'm more or less in the area, and that's a generous amount 😊. I can recommend it to everyone. Those who want can also follow the entire smoking process.

Great to get make progress, but I find it quite dull after 10 km. So if you are like me, take some "shortcuts" over the hills or go for other highlights along the path and then you will be happy to be back on the Vennbahn for some km ;)

The Ardennes is characterized by diverse terrain, even on no-traffic routes. While some routes, particularly those utilizing former railway lines like the Vennbahn, offer smooth gradients, others will present constant elevation changes, providing a varied and engaging cycling experience.
Yes, the Ardennes has many options for less experienced cyclists and families. Over 490 easy routes are available, often utilizing the RAVeL network (Réseau Autonome des Voies Lentes) which follows former railway lines and towpaths. These routes typically have gentle gradients and are well-maintained, making them ideal for a relaxed ride. The Meuse by bike from Charleville-Mézières to Haybes is a great example of a scenic, relatively flat route along the river.
The Ardennes is rich in natural beauty. Many routes follow river valleys, offering breathtaking views of limestone cliffs and dense forests. You might encounter natural wonders like the Coo Waterfall or the Bayehon Waterfall. Keep an eye out for viewpoints such as the View of the Abbey's castle, providing panoramic vistas of the landscape. The region's extensive forests and the Ardennes Regional Nature Park also offer serene backdrops for your ride.
Absolutely. The Ardennes is well-suited for multi-day touring. Long-distance routes like the Vennbahn, a 125-kilometer car-free path, and sections of the Meuse Cycle Route (EuroVelo 19) provide excellent opportunities for extended trips. These routes often connect charming villages and towns, allowing for overnight stays and exploration of local culture.

During these months, the weather is milder, and the natural scenery is at its most vibrant. Summer offers the warmest temperatures, while spring and autumn provide beautiful foliage and fewer crowds. Always check local weather forecasts before your trip.
Public transport options vary across the Ardennes, but many towns and cities that serve as starting points for cycling routes are accessible by train or bus. For example, Charleville-Mézières, a significant town along many routes, has good rail connections. It's advisable to check regional public transport websites for specific routes and bike carriage policies, as these can differ.
Many towns and villages along popular no-traffic cycling routes offer designated parking areas. For routes like the loop from Monthermé to Charleville-Mézières, you'll typically find parking in the larger towns. Look for public car parks near train stations or town centers, which are often conveniently located near route access points. Always check local signage for parking regulations and fees.
