The approximately 23-meter-high tower was built at the turn of the century in honor of the first Chancellor of the German Empire, Otto von Bismarck (1815-1898). As early as 1904, the then independent cities of Elberfeld and Barmen decided to jointly create a memorial to Otto von Bismarck. The necessary donations were collected by citizens of both cities. The tower, built from local sandstone in a simple, massive form, was located on the border between Elberfeld and Barmen. Located on the Hardt-Anlage, it is approximately 234 meters above sea level. Shortly after the laying of the foundation stone on April 1, 1907, thieves broke into the foundation stone. They stole the time capsule containing documents and coins worth approximately 18 marks. The tower was inaugurated on October 19, 1907, and opened to visitors about six months later.
