May 15, 2026, Waffenplatz

If you walk from the pedestrian zone through the Herbartgang, you reach the Waffenplatz. Today it is an important entry point to the city center, but it wasn't always like that. After the city fire in 1679, barracks were built here for the Danish garrison. Later, the poor and sick were housed in them. After the demolition of the barracks, in the revolutionary year of 1848, weapons for the civic guard were issued on this square. Hence the name Waffenplatz. After serving as a parking lot for a long time, a new quarter has developed here today with a high-quality mix of retail, gastronomy, and office spaces for innovative companies. Where cars used to park, the Waffenplatz today presents itself as a modern, urban square with water fountains and a double row of plane trees. The Oldenburg city center thus has another very attractive square for events, in addition to the Schloßplatz.

It's always busy here in the evening. The other pub meeting point is at the market.

🏰 The Oldenburg Palace Gardens are one of the most beautiful and important historical parks in Lower Saxony and are located right in the heart of the city of Oldenburg. The Palace Gardens are an ideal place for a stroll after a bike ride along the Hunte River or a visit to the nearby Oldenburg Lock.

Horse: Donnerhall (1981 – †2002), an Oldenburg stallion who became a legend both as a successful sport horse (team world champion) and as a sire of the century in dressage horse breeding.
