The naming basic function of a town hall was to provide the council with a suitable meeting place. From 1278, this most important political body of the city comprised 20 members (see city constitution). The earliest mention of a Vienna town hall dates from 1305. It was not located at the Salvatorgasse site, but in the Wollzeile. The building is likely to be located on the site of today's house number 3 (Kleiner Federlhof), whose plot extended to the Lugeck.[1] From when this town hall in the Wollzeile was in use and whether it was the first Vienna town hall, can no longer be clarified.

A great option is the "Burgtheater Vienna – Vienna City Hall & ice rink loop from Rathaus," which offers a pleasant stroll through central Vienna.
For breathtaking panoramic views, head to the hills bordering the city.
