Even from afar, the towers and gates invite you into the historic old town, and narrow alleys lead you into picturesque nooks and crannies. The "stone knight" greets us upright on the market square fountain. It bears witness to the pride and self-confidence of the former Free Imperial City.

The monastery complex in Gengenbach was integrated into the town's fortifications. Over time, these evolved from a simple wall into a complex defensive system with a double ring of walls, a barbican, a moat, and an earthen rampart, constantly adapted to changing needs. The first fortifications were built in the mid-12th century. About a hundred years later, the complex was expanded, and a parapet walk was added to the wall. This parapet walk, which encircles the town, was faithfully reconstructed in 1991 by a local heritage association, allowing visitors today to gain a vivid impression of the once-fortified town in its original form.
