When the Munich Residenz was extended northward in 1613 under Maximilian I, the Court Garden, which had already existed for more than fifty years, was also redesigned and extended further westward. The central Temple of Diana was completed in 1616. The Court Garden was destroyed in the Second World War; after the war, it was recreated as a compromise between a landscape garden and a Renaissance garden.

The High Baroque Church of St. Cajetan and Adelheid, consecrated in 1675, served as the court and monastery church of the Theatine Order until 1801. For this reason, Munich residents usually refer to it simply as the Theatine Church. It is one of the most important burial sites of the Bavarian ruling dynasty of Wittelsbach. However, as a rule, only the bodies of the deceased were interred here; their hearts were buried in the Chapel of Grace in Altötting. Among those resting in sarcophagi here are the Bavarian kings Maximilian I Joseph and Maximilian II, Prince Regent Luitpold of Bavaria, and Otto I, King of Greece.
