July 10, 2025, Kielder Dam

At the Kielder Dam spillway, three striking stones—known as the Waterstones—commemorate the reservoir's official opening by Queen Elizabeth II in May 1982. This understated art installation offers views of the vast water, the imposing valve tower, and the technical heart of England's largest hydroelectric system. Cyclists following the Reivers Route will find a place where art, nature, and infrastructure converge—a brief stop that invites reflection and a photo with royal flair.

Housed in the old village schoolhouse, Falstone Tearooms offers a warm and welcoming stopover for cyclists, walkers, and other travelers in the heart of Northumberland National Park. You'll find home-cooked meals such as breakfast, soup, sandwiches, and cakes, plus a small shop with local crafts and treats. The tearoom is dog-, boat-, and bike-friendly, has free Wi-Fi, and private parking. Located close to Kielder Water and the Reivers Route, it's the perfect spot to unwind with a cappuccino and a good story.

Back into Byrness, there are rows of garages and houses in this village. It looks like a close knit community

The surface here was quite rough, uneven and different size small stones. Best rode on a mountain bike. Gravell bikes might go over it.

Passing through the campsite at Redesdale. This is a larger village and there are people around if needing any assistance or just to say hello to after being in quite remote locations

This route section forms part of the Pennine Way and crosses potentially boggy ground. The duckboards here help you make progress across what would otherwise be not that good a footpath. Otherwise it is typical Cheviot scenery of rolling moorland with a nearby forest.
