The circular trail around the gorge near Kavousi leads along here. I've done it three times and highly recommend this easy hike.

Only about 100 meters above the ancient olive tree lies this pretty little church in a niche below the wonderful mountain landscape.

Beautifully situated village between mountains and sea on the Agios Nikolaos - Sitia route. The village has many abandoned and picturesquely dilapidated houses and corners, as well as many newly built or beautifully renovated buildings.

A village beautifully situated between mountains and sea on the Agios Nikolaos-Sitia route. The village is home to many abandoned and picturesquely dilapidated houses, as well as many newly built or beautifully renovated buildings. The surrounding countryside is great for hiking; we particularly enjoyed the area above, through olive groves toward the mountains.

A lovely stop on a hike – the tree is located just above Kavousi and can be reached in about 20-30 minutes, depending on the route and walking pace. Impressive trunk girth 😳 and an incredible age.

If you walk such paths often, there is absolutely no risk. And even for a less experienced mountaineer with surefootedness, there are no problems. It is well worth it.
