The first windmills were built by the Venetians in the 16th century. Today, 16 windmills remain on Mykonos. Some are located in the town center of Chora and can be visited by tourists visiting Mykonos. Other windmills have now been privatized or converted into accommodation.

A great and challenging route, especially in the wind. But the view makes up for it all.

The unusual and unique church from the 15th century is certainly the most famous place of worship on the island of Mykonos.

The streets of the city are simply a dream! It is simply fantastic to wander through the city without a destination and get lost.

Here you sit in the front row with a view of the windmills and Little Venice. Very expensive - a coffee costs 10 euros.

There are 8 hiking trails in the wider Δήλος (Μυκόνου) area that are accessible from bus stations. These routes primarily originate from bus stops on Mykonos, which serves as the gateway to the archaeological island of Delos. You can explore a variety of landscapes, from coastal paths to historical sites.
The best time to hike in the Δήλος (Μυκόνου) area is during the spring (April to early June) and autumn (September to October). During these periods, the weather is milder, and the crowds are smaller. Summer can be very hot, especially on the exposed archaeological site of Delos, making early morning or late afternoon hikes preferable. Always bring plenty of water and sun protection.
Yes, there are easy routes suitable for families. For instance, the Hidden Beach – View of Paraga Beach loop from Platys Gialos is an easy option on Mykonos, offering pleasant coastal views. When visiting Delos itself, the ascent to Mount Kynthos is relatively short and manageable for children with sturdy shoes, offering incredible panoramic views of the ancient ruins and surrounding islands.
While many outdoor areas on Mykonos are generally dog-friendly, it's important to note that Delos is a protected archaeological site and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Pets are generally not permitted within the archaeological zone to preserve the ancient ruins. Always check specific regulations for individual trails or sites on Mykonos before bringing your dog.
The terrain varies. On Mykonos, you'll find a mix of paved paths, dirt tracks, and coastal trails, often with some elevation changes. On Delos, the paths are primarily unpaved, rocky, and uneven, winding through ancient ruins and up to Mount Kynthos. Sturdy walking shoes are essential for both, especially on Delos where facilities are limited and shade is scarce.
Yes, several routes offer a circular experience. For example, the Platis Gialos Beach – Hidden Beach loop from Ornos on Mykonos is a moderate circular hike. These loops allow you to return to your starting point without needing additional transport.
The region is rich in history and natural beauty. While hiking on Mykonos, you can explore charming old towns, windmills, and beautiful beaches. On Delos, every step is through an open-air museum. You can hike past the Terrace of the Lions, the Ancient Theatre, and ascend Mount Kynthos for breathtaking views of the entire island and the Aegean Sea. Delos itself is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Given the often exposed and rocky terrain, especially on Delos, it's crucial to wear sturdy, comfortable hiking shoes. Bring plenty of water, sun protection (hat, sunglasses, high-SPF sunscreen), and light, breathable clothing. Facilities are very limited on Delos, so pack any snacks or essentials you might need. A small first-aid kit is also advisable.
On Mykonos, many bus station routes will pass through or near towns and beaches where cafes, restaurants, and shops are readily available. However, on the island of Delos, facilities are extremely limited. There are no cafes or extensive amenities, so you must bring your own water and any food you require for your visit.
The area is highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 4.3 stars. Reviewers often praise the unique blend of ancient history and stunning panoramic views, particularly from Mount Kynthos on Delos. The ability to combine cultural exploration with outdoor activity, and the beautiful Aegean Sea backdrops, are frequently highlighted.
Yes, for those seeking a more challenging experience, routes like the Mykonos Windmills – Alleys of Mykonos Old Town loop from Mykonos offer a longer distance and more significant elevation gain. While Delos itself doesn't have 'difficult' routes in terms of technicality, the exposed nature and lack of shade can make even shorter hikes challenging in hot weather.
