Chapel built during the 18th century. On the Campanino promontory, bordering Sestri Levante, there already existed a chapel with an adjoining hospice dedicated to San Leonardo dei Francesi; this building was owned by the Knights of Malta until 1665, when it passed into the hands of Leonardo Frugoni, who also took care of the adjoining lands. The lands, granted on emphyteusis to Frugoni, then passed to the Cambiaso family and subsequently to the Negrotto marquises. The original chapel, after being used as a shelter for animals, finally fell into ruin. The current building was built during the 18th century together with the nearby palace of the Cambiaso family and then of the Negrotto marquises. An epigraph relating to the indulgences granted by Pope Innocent XI in perpetuity (1689) was recovered from the ancient chapel and walled up here. Inside, near the marble altar, there is an altarpiece by the painter Bartolomeo Biscaino depicting the Madonna del Carmine with Child, Saint Erasmus Bishop, and Saint Leonard of Limoges. The ruins, located between Sestri Levante and Cavi di Lavagna, are easily accessible by following the route of the ancient Via Aurelia.

I have tried several times to upload photos of the many excursions we have done but Komoot does not publish them while I believe that unlike the comments the most eloquent things are the photos and not the comments. However the trail is really beautiful and well maintained and was very much appreciated by the whole group. Highly recommended
