The Roman Catholic Church of St. Nicholas and St. Catherine is the parish church of Steinach, a district of the market town of Bad Bocklet in the Lower Franconian district of Bad Kissingen. The parish of Steinach originally belonged to the ancient parish of Brend. The present church was built in 1860 on the site of an earlier structure. The late Gothic church tower is all that remains of the old church. During various church renovations in the 19th and 20th centuries, some of the church's original ornamentation was lost, including the historic paintings of the "Last Judgment" on the front wall in front of the chancel, the pulpit from 1620, the high altar, and the side altars. The Gothic tabernacle belonging to the Lords of Bibra has been in the Bavarian National Museum in Munich since 1872. Only the Riemenschneider crucifix survived the Royal Bavarian state plunder of Franconian cultural and ecclesiastical property in Steinach, as it was not considered a work of art by the Royal Bavarian officials. In 1945, the church was severely damaged and had to be rebuilt. The slender eastern chancel tower is a Julius Echter tower with pointed-arch sound windows. The chancel on the ground floor has a ribbed vault and two windows. The flat-roofed nave has six bays. The church windows are pointed arches with tracery. The west facade of the nave features a rose window above the portal. A particular treasure, besides a late Gothic baptismal font and the alms box, is the wooden crucifix by Tilman Riemenschneider from 1516. The rest of the church's furnishings, especially the altars, are modern. The right side altar contains a painting of Saint Joseph with Child and Saints Sebastian and Wendelin. The left side altar depicts the Virgin Mary, also with Child, and Saints Catherine and Notburga. (Wikipedia)
