The Hexenturm has a fascinating but often misunderstood history. It is a silent witness to history, and now the Hexenturm in Kanalstraße is to be extensively renovated. Therefore, we take you on a small journey through time, which not only leads us through the historic walls of this structure but also reveals a common misconception. The Hexenturm in Fulda's Kanalstraße, a historic structure from the 12th century, is currently the focus of extensive renovation. This tower, which once served as part of the inner city wall and the north gate and separated the city from the monastery district, is the best-preserved tower of Fulda's medieval city fortifications. It embodies a piece of living history and will soon offer an unusual view over the old town. Interesting is the fact that the Hexenturm, contrary to popular belief, actually has nothing to do with the witch hunts. Although it has been called the "Hexenturm" since the 19th century, the tower originally served as a watchtower and later as a women's prison. However, the victims of the witch hunts were imprisoned in Fulda's city palace. The tower's connection to the witch hunts probably only arose much later in popular parlance. Today, an information sign at the tower commemorates the 270 victims of the witch hunts in Fulda, who were honored with a memorial on the Old Cathedral Parish Cemetery in November 2008.
