Eschwege has been accessible by rail since October 30, 1875. The last steam locomotive to pull a scheduled passenger train to Eschwege ran on June 2, 1973. With the discontinuation of passenger train service to Wanfried in 1981 and all passenger train service from Eschwege to Kassel on May 31, 1985, the station became history after more than 100 years. After almost 25 years of hibernation, Eschwege was reconnected to the rail network on December 12, 2009, and is now called Eschwege Stadtbahnhof.
