The Basilica of Saint Amelberg was built in the mid-11th century in the late Ottonian style. Before the year 1000, a small hall church already stood on the site of the current basilica. 7th-century sarcophagi were also found there. Many saints, such as King Zwentibold and Amelberga, whose unique (typically Maasland) shrine can be admired in the treasury, were buried here. Textiles and silverware dating back over a thousand years are preserved in the treasury. You will also find the Gospels from around 1020, one of the oldest books in the Netherlands. For more information or to book a tour, visit https://www.museumstiftsusteren.nl/ If the basilica is closed, you can also view it digitally by scanning the QR codes at the church entrance.
