Family friendly hiking trails in Schadijksche Bosschen traverse a landscape characterized by extensive forests, restored heathland, and areas of drifting sand. Historically, the region was a vast heathland and peat bog, with Scots pines planted to stabilize sand. Efforts are ongoing to restore original heathland, notably at Schaaks Heide, which features open spaces and grazing animals. The terrain includes gentle hills formed by wind erosion, with the Sint Martinsberg being the highest point at 34 meters.

The Schadijkse Bossen (525 ha), sometimes also called Schadijker Bossen, are located in the municipality of Horst aan de Maas. Extensive heathlands used to be located here. In 2007, the Dutch Forestry Commission (Staatsbosbeheer) cleared part of the forest to create an open area where the heathland and drifting sand landscape of the past can regenerate. Several hiking trails have been established in the forests.

For a 'flat' walk it goes up and down here regularly, not long but several times. The sand does not make it easier. But the effort is rewarded.
