The Tota Pulchra Es Maria chapel is located on the Herselseweg near Lierop, in the middle of the open rural area between meadows and fields. The Latin text “Tota Pulchra Es Maria” means: “Thou art wholly beautiful, Mary.” The chapel was built in 1955 by the Lierop guilds together with former East Indies veterans. Materials from older buildings in Lierop were partly reused for the construction. Like many Brabant field chapels, this place originated from the strong Catholic tradition of the region. Its open location along the road is striking, making the chapel visible from a distance among the agricultural lands. In the past, such Marian chapels served as places for prayer, reflection, and protection for travellers, farmers, and the surrounding land. Today, it forms a recognizable resting point in the landscape around the Herselsche Heide and the rural area.
