The statue is indeed a reminder of the hundreds of Laakdallers who moved to Wallonia since 1800 to work in the beet industry. But what was their life like? VILT vzw asked a few of them at the launch of the statue in 2020. Frans Van Gehuchten (then 76) and his wife Maria Van Aelst (then 75) from Averboodse Baan remember their 'Walloon time' as if it were yesterday. "It was hard work, from 5 in the morning until 9 in the evening," says Frans. Frans Van Gehuchten was only fourteen when he first went to the region around Huy to harvest beets. "We went for two periods each year: early October and early May, for four to five weeks each time. We slept on straw at the farmers', which was anything but comfortable. It was hard work, from 5 in the morning until 9 at night. I worked in Wallonia until the early 1960s. Then machines replaced manual labour". "There were three categories of workers in the beet field. I was one of the 'little ones', who had to cut the foliage off the beets. The 'big ones' dug out the beets. The 'half ones', boys of about eighteen, helped pull the beets out of the ground", Maria remembers. "Frans and I often worked alone or in a small group. That was what we liked best. Others were part of 'compagnies', large groups that went to work on very large fields. There was often a lot of jealousy there and the workers chased each other to work as hard as possible". The men and women from the Laakdal and Tessenderlo region found work through the so-called 'placeurs'. These people recruited sufficient workers in the Kempen region for the Walloon farmers in good time. The local Geuns family in particular ensured that hundreds of men and women, mainly from farming families, were 'placed' in Wallonia. The statue 'De Walenman' was created by the Vosselaar artist Jef Van Leeuw, whose roots lie in Veerle-Heide. Averbode Bos & Heide is known for its forests. For a long time, they were intensively managed. Production was the main objective, resulting in large-scale exotic coniferous forests. There was hardly any room left for species-rich, indigenous mixed deciduous forests. Now that the forests are managed in terms of natural values, deciduous tree species are given a chance again. Through various phases of targeted thinning in the pines and the promotion of local deciduous species, most forests are transformed into varied deciduous forests. Varied in species, ages and densities. Herbs such as oak fern, lily of the valley and lily of the valley benefit from it, as do the small kingfisher butterfly and the middle spotted woodpecker.
