In the Vrijbroekpark in Mechelen there is a waste-free picnic table. At first glance there is nothing special to see on the table, except that it is quite large and unusually shaped. What is special, however, is that the table is made of wood from trees that come from the park. The idea is that visitors prepare their picnic at home and pack it in sealable boxes, so that they do not have to leave any waste behind. That is why there are no waste bins anywhere around the inaugurated picnic table.

On this segment you will get to know the Ferraris landscape of meadow and willow. The new park, or the old? This extension is a fine example of historical landscape. The marshy meadow looks exactly the same as it did 300 years ago. Between 1771 and 1778, Joseph de Ferraris made detailed maps of the Austrian Netherlands on behalf of Empress Maria Theresia of Austria. You will recognize the same canals, meadows and rows of trees. What is new here? You walk through a living collection of willows or salicetum. This route is recommended for lovers of the past. The landscape brings you peace of mind.

The Hondsbossen are a remnant of the early medieval Waverwoud that stretched between Nete and Dijle. It consisted of peat, wooded and open, heathland areas. What remains of the forest now, fortunately still breathes the magic of yesteryear.
