The Creek Area around Ostend is a unique wetland zone, with a network of creeks, marshes, reed beds and grasslands. These creeks were created by the natural silting up of rivers and other waterways. The area has a rich biodiversity, which makes it ideal for a nature walk.

Nice, well maintained petting zoo with a cheap café (snacks and drinks) and toilets (clean and well stocked) on site. There are donkeys, a pony, horses, cows, goats, sheep, a rabbit, chickens and peacocks. A nice, open play area with sand, slides and climbing frames. There is also an orchard.

De Zwaanhoek is a polder area on the territory of Oostende and Oudenburg of approximately 200 hectares, of which 150 hectares is nature reserve. In the past, peat and turf were extracted from the ground in this area, which has now created a varied landscape with meadows, ditches, marshes and fields. The low-lying polder area consists of a thin clay layer on a peat subsoil. Thanks to the presence of salty and brackish 'water bubbles' under the freshwater layer, called 'wells', unique plant species can be admired. In the spring you can admire various types of orchids there. The nature reserve is not only of great importance for plants, but also for all kinds of meadow and marsh birds. Both in the summer and during the migration periods and in the winter, there are many bird species present, such as lesser white-fronted geese, greylag geese, black-tailed godwit, avocet, lapwing, redshank and oystercatcher. Furthermore, you will also find green and brown frogs and small newts in the ditches in the Zwaanhoek. The nature reserve itself is only accessible under the guidance of a guide (more information via www.natuurpunt.be). The lookout tower along the Plassendale-Nieuwpoort canal is accessible to everyone, from where you can enjoy the view of the entire area. The tower, called 'het Rietnest', symbolizes the nest of the reed warbler. A little further on there is also a bird watching wall. Information panels help the novice bird watcher to recognize the bird species. You also have a beautiful view of the area from the neighborhood park behind Ontmoetingscentrum ’t Kasteeltje and the playground in the Ter Zwaanhoek development. And so you can enjoy the nature reserve without disturbing the peace of the breeding and wintering birds.
