The Romanesque church of Mespelare dates from the 12th century and was dedicated to Saint Aldegonde upon its foundation. The church is the best-preserved and most interesting place of pilgrimage from the Romanesque period in our region. The monumental tower was decorated with statues of the four evangelists at the four corners near the bell chamber. Originally, the spire was Romanesque and made of natural stone. In 1745, after a lightning strike and fire, this spire was replaced by an apple- and pear-shaped spire. (Dendermonde Tourism)

Pillory or Lordship Pillar, located opposite the church. This lordship pillory, a tangible testament to medieval justice, was erected in the second half of the 18th century by the Antwerp Goubau family, lords of Mespelare and Gijzegem. It was restored in 1961 according to plans by architect Edmond Eggermont (Ghent) from 1958, including the replacement of the crowning stone, which had previously been kept in the Dendermonde city museum. It is situated slightly diagonally in front of the main entrance to the cemetery on a renovated round bluestone pedestal with two steps. The slender bluestone column, held together by a metal anchor, is crowned with a spherical ornament with a cartouche at the front and back, featuring a central coat of arms of the Goubau family and a knight's helmet as the centerpiece. At the Werf in Aalst stands the memorial to Father Daens, ceremonially unveiled in 1957, exactly 50 years after his death. Designed by Marc De Bruyn, the statue depicts Daens among workers and a mother with her child – a symbol of the hope and comfort he brought to the working class. The inscription on the monument reads: “Neither a slave nor a beggar may be a worker. He must be a free and prosperous man.” Financed by his followers, this monument remains a powerful tribute to the social struggle and ideals of Father Daens (1839–1907).

Aalst's station building was designed in 1852 by the Belgian architect Jean-Pierre Cluysenaar and officially inaugurated in 1856 by Crown Prince Leopold, later King Leopold II. The building combines the appearance of a medieval castle with a Gothic town hall and is constructed of Boom brick and bluestone, typical of the Tudor Gothic style. The side pavilions and platform canopy were added in 1890. Although the station was partially demolished in 1990, the historic facades and tower were preserved, making Aalst's station the only remaining Cluysenaar "town station." Today, it is a protected monument and a unique piece of railway heritage, while the surrounding area has been renovated thanks to Project ASO.

This small place of worship on the Dender River has a turbulent history. According to tradition, it was founded as early as 681 by Saint Amand after the discovery of a miraculous statue. After repeated destruction and reconstruction, it was given its current, simple yet modern appearance in 1955-56, designed by Stani De Neef and Alfons Singelijn. A place that exudes simplicity, yet simultaneously breathes centuries-old devotion and tradition.
