Eberstein Hunting Lodge

Highlight • Historical Site

It was built in 1844 in the Moorish style that was common at the time and was used by the royal family until 1918, particularly for wild boar hunting. The castle was located in a large wild boar enclosure, a type of enclosure known as a "sucking garden". In this area, wild boars were cared for and looked after for the royal hunt. The castle is usually closed, but today it is used by the municipality of Dittersdorf, which also organizes its maintenance, as an event venue.

Schwarza Waterfall (Schwarza Valley)

Highlight (Segment) • Waterfall

This cycle path is one of the most beautiful in all of Thuringia and I'm not just saying that because it's my home. The path is only hard-packed gravel and therefore unsuitable for racing bikes, but with a trekking bike it is great to ride in both directions. Because the road is on the other side of the Schwarza and is screened off by trees and bushes, it is also relatively quiet. The winding valley is really varied and pleasantly cool in midsummer. I can really recommend the part to everyone.

These fascinating geological formations, also known as scours, are a special feature of this river. Their formation is due to an erosive process caused by the turbulent flow of the water and the sedimentary material it carries. Irregularities in the riverbed, such as small depressions, bumps, or harder rock inclusions, can cause the water to swirl. These initial eddies create a rotating water movement with increased flow velocity and a grinding effect directly on the riverbed.

Eberstein hunting lodge was built in the Moorish ruin style. It is located in the former wild boar enclosure, where wild boars were intensively cared for and hunted by the royal family until 1918. The cellar rooms were used to store game feed and there are still remains of a horse stable.
