Alkmaar has a picturesque old town where you can also take a canal cruise if it didn't work out in Amsterdam 😉😁

No longer a classic church, but the visit is worth it. In the Grote Kerk Alkmaar there is so much to discover! Besides the imposing architecture of this centuries-old building, the church holds a rich history and many treasures. Two ancient, still playable organs, the vault painting „The Last Judgment“ and the beautiful artwork „The Great Window“ by Fiona Tan. You can also book guided tours. https://grotekerkalkmaar.nl/

In Alkmaar, the canal sprites chuckle, with Frisian spirit and seagull murmurs. Bridges poop echoes over green waves, and bicycles sail like crazy bells. The houses laugh crookedly at the water's edge, shutters wobble to the rhythm of the hand. Cheese scent drifts through the quiet blue, and every canal has its own gray. The boats chatter with a cheerful beat, they carry mustaches of rope and tax. A waiter waves quietly from the pier, “Another cheese platter?” – The answer: “Already hot!” Benches on the shore tell stories, of canal pros and pigeons with duties. The sun paints lights, the waves make fax, and Alkmaar grins as if it were a little fun. So the city splashes through day and night, until every gust of wind laughs a little song at you. Grass, cheese, curio stuff – Alkmaar, you glittering canal full of charm.

Female, Catholic, single. Living in holy fear of God, good faith, love, and unity—these were the conditions imposed on the residents of the Hofje van Paling en van Foreest (Palling and Foreest Farmhouse) as late as the 16th century. In return, they received free accommodation and a small allowance. Pieter Claesz Paling, the wealthiest man in the city, and his wife Josina van Foreest laid the foundation stone for the oldest Provenhuys (provenance house) in Alkmaar in 1540. Corner house with gable and coat of arms; Hofje Paling en Foreest in Alkmaar. A Provenance house was a testamentary bequest to mostly single, less affluent, or elderly members of the community in the form of free, lifelong accommodation. A provenance (literally, a proof) could also include a gift in kind, such as peat for heating, or a financial contribution. These generous acts of kindness were partly motivated by charity, but mostly by a guilty conscience. Wealth didn't come easily. Exploitation, slavery, exploitation, and nepotism were common business practices in the 16th century. It was better to accumulate significant assets during one's earthly life for the scales of justice on Judgment Day. As the inscription and coat of arms on the gable of the corner house attest, their daughter Wilhelmina and her husband, Andries van Oudshoorn, continued their parents' legacy. The two large-format portraits exhibited in the city museum perfectly reflect the family's wealth and influence. Not every citizen could afford to commission one of the most sought-after painters of the late Renaissance, Martin van Heemskerck.
