In 1810, Napoleon incorporated the Netherlands into the French Empire. In November/December 1813, the Russian general Alexander von Benckendorff succeeded in breaking Napoleon's rule within a few weeks with a daring campaign. Commissioned by Tsar Alexander I, he made a significant contribution to the creation of what is now the Netherlands. His horsemen from the Russian 1st Bashkir Regiment—fearless archers—were among the first to advance to Amsterdam and The Hague. Benckendorff stationed his Bashkirs in Wijhe for a month. In Veessen, they built a pontoon bridge with side-by-side boats across the IJssel. For two months, the pontoon bridge provided an important strategic link across the IJssel for Bashkirs, Cossacks, and regular troops. The sculpture by Alexander Taratynov conveys the impression of a Bashkir horseman. The statue is a donation from the Republic of Bashkortostan (Russian Federation). In Wijhe, you'll find a larger-than-life statue of Alexander Count von Benckendorff. It stands roughly at the site where the Bashkirs and Cossacks once camped.

As long as the IJssel can discharge sufficient water, the locks remain low and the hinterland dry. If the IJssel has difficulty with the discharge and the water level threatens to become too high, the gates are lifted and the hinterland will be flooded. We also call this 'room for the river'.
