Hardenstein Castle Ruins

Highlight • Castle

Here you cycle through the idyllic Muttental - the cradle of Ruhrpott mining. Hardenstein Castle was there even earlier than the tunnels, but today you can only marvel at the (yet impressive) remains. It is located directly on the Ruhr and is a nice place to take a break.

Apropos Ruhr: If you plan to follow the Ruhrtal cycle path, there is another cool highlight waiting for you next door. Here you have to cross the Ruhr, but without a bridge. It is made possible by the only ferry connection along the river cycle path. The electric passenger ferry brings you silently to the other bank.

Very nice facility. Unfortunately, you can no longer enjoy the sun with delicacies in the idyllic castle courtyard, the restaurant is only for private parties! The old prayer house is worth a visit!

Hengsteysee - Niedernhof - Business mansion Funckenburg near Herdecke

The Niedernhof, also called Villa Funcke or Funckenburg, is a business villa in Herdecke. It is located on the northern shore of Hengsteysee. Today, the "Cafee Seeschlößchen" is at home here.

The Niedernhof was built in 1872 as a country residence of Bernhard Wilhelm Funcke II. In 1895, the Hagen entrepreneur Bernhard Wilhelm Funcke III, owner of the screw factory Funcke & Hueck, acquired the grounds of the abandoned manor Haus Niedernhofen about 700 m further downriver. The villa was built in neo-Gothic style of natural stone and was popularly called the Funckenburg.

In order to be able to reach his factory in Hagen at any time without much detours, Funcke built a private iron pedestrian suspension bridge over the Ruhr, which spanned the river between two medieval towers. The southern bridge tower, today located on an island in the lake, has been preserved.

In 1919, the heirs of Wilhelm Funcke sold the site on the Ruhr to the Ruhrverband in Essen, which began in 1926 with the construction of the reservoir.

March 21, 2026, Historic Center of Blankenstein

In Hattingen's second historical center, half-timbered houses and old official buildings cluster around the picturesque market square, such as the Stadtmuseum – the showpiece of the square. Vis-à-vis, the Galerie Kleine Affäre and Forstmanns enliven the village with exhibitions, readings and concerts. Just behind the Stadtmuseum, the Gethmannsche Landschaftsgarten, established in 1808 on a hilltop, invites you to take a walk under shady foliage. The highlight of the park: the Belvedere viewing platform on the Ruhr slope with a magnificent view over the Ruhr valley. The Blankensteiner Weihnachtsmarkt is a traditional market with flair. The Butterbrotmarkt in July offers local and regional specialties.

Wetter Castle ruins stand majestically on a hill overlooking Lake Harkort and are among the most historically significant castles in the Ruhr Valley. Their origins date back to the 13th century, when they were built by the Counts of the Mark as a fortified residence. Parts of the medieval structure are still visible today – including the keep, remains of residential buildings, and sections of the curtain wall. Over the centuries, the castle experienced turbulent times: During the Soest Feud (1444–1449), it was besieged and severely damaged. From the 18th century onward, it fell into increasing disrepair until it took on a surprising new role in the 19th century. In 1819, Friedrich Harkort, one of the pioneers of industrialization in the Ruhr region, established one of the region's first machine factories in the ruins – a milestone in early industrial history. Today, the castle ruins are a popular hiking destination with impressive views of Lake Harkort and the Ruhr Valley. Visitors appreciate the blend of nature, history, and panoramic views. Currently, construction work is causing temporary road closures, but the site remains an atmospheric highlight and an ideal place to tell the story of Wetter's development from a medieval castle settlement to an industrial town. https://hagenentdecken.de/kulturntdecken/sehenswuerdigkeitenwahrzeichen/
