The Östra Kalven trail is steep in parts but easy to follow, and leads you up onto the open mountain heath. At the top you’ll find a mast and a small locked shelter, along with a stunning view over the area, wide and open across the Sälenfjällen mountains. The terrain is quiet and bare, with heather, lichen and small pools scattered around.

From the top of this plateau you gain good views of the moor, and a range of different sized cairns which are used for navigational purposes.

The hut is large, well maintained and invites you to linger, as it offers good protection from the wind and is also just the thing after the strenuous stretch from Sälen. I cooked an early dinner here in peace and refined it with a few ingredients that a trail angel must have left behind. Someone even left whole trekking meals and oil here. 🙏
