Mjølke-Lars bua is a charming and historic hut nestled in the mountain pastures of Flikja. The name, which means "The hut of Milk-Lars," points to the rich history of summer farming in the area. This small, traditional building is a great place to stay overnight. It stands as a testament to the life of the herders who once worked in these mountains, and it's a wonderfully authentic highlight to find on your hike. The views over the lake are a special part of the experience. You can book your stay here: https://www.inatur.no/hytte/5b6d6f57108342000385109a

As you hike along this trail, you are met by the occasional forestry block. This particular trail not only winds its way through the forest but is made of it. The forest path here is helped underfoot on the steeper sections with trunks of the birch trees that surround the path.

On the panoramic route to Lykkja, exceptionally beautiful area at Skogshorn.

For me it is most beautiful in autumn or winter because of the colors. Connecting road from Hemsedal via Lykkja to Valdres. After Lykkja there is a toll road (2023), but it is worth it for the panoramic view.

These routes are specifically chosen to be suitable for families looking to explore the unique wetland ecosystem and surrounding natural beauty.
The core of Øynad'N Naturreservat is a wetland ecosystem, so some trails may feature boardwalks or paths through marshy areas, offering a distinct natural experience. The broader region of Oppland, where the reserve is located, also offers diverse landscapes including forest paths and areas with mountain views, providing a variety of terrain for family adventures.
Yes, for families with younger children or those seeking a gentler experience, the Nøsen Yoga og Fjellhotell – Forest Path loop from Nøsen Fjellstue is an excellent choice. This easy 5.4 km loop takes approximately 1 hour 25 minutes, offering a pleasant forest walk with minimal elevation gain.
Absolutely! Many of the family-friendly trails in this guide are circular, making them convenient for families. For example, the View of Helsingvatnet – Helsingvatnet Lake loop from Ullsåkstølane is a moderate 14 km circular route that offers beautiful lake views, taking around 3 hours 49 minutes to complete.
The warmer months, typically from late spring through early autumn, are ideal for family hiking in Øynad'N Naturreservat. During this period, the wetland flora is vibrant, and the weather is generally more pleasant for outdoor activities. It's also when you're most likely to observe the diverse birdlife the reserve protects.
Regulations regarding dogs can vary within nature reserves. While the general Norwegian 'right to roam' allows dogs on leashes in most open country, specific rules may apply within Øynad'N Naturreservat, especially concerning the protection of breeding wetland birds. It's always best to check local signage or official park information before bringing your dog.
On these family-friendly hikes, you can expect to experience the unique wetland environment of Øynad'N Naturreservat, which is home to specialized vegetation and birdlife. The broader region also offers picturesque lake views, such as those found on the Hike to Hestebottjerne lake, and serene forest paths.
Parking availability varies by trailhead. Many popular starting points for hikes in the region, including those leading to trails like the Mjølke-Lars Shelter – Lake Movaten Shore loop from Halvorstølen, typically have designated parking areas. It's advisable to check the specific route details on komoot for information on parking at the starting point of your chosen trail.
The komoot community highly rates the hiking experiences in this area, with an average score of 4.5 stars from 46 ratings. Hikers often praise the peaceful natural surroundings and the opportunity to explore diverse landscapes, from wetlands to forest paths, making it a rewarding destination for families.
For families with older children or those seeking a longer adventure, moderate trails like the Hike to Hestebottjerne lake offer a good challenge. This 13.1 km route involves some elevation gain and takes approximately 3 hours 51 minutes, providing a more extensive exploration of the area's natural beauty.
Given the diverse terrain and potential for wetland areas, we recommend wearing comfortable, waterproof hiking boots. Layered clothing is always a good idea to adapt to changing weather conditions, and bringing rain gear is wise, regardless of the forecast. Don't forget insect repellent, especially during warmer months in wetland environments.
