If you hike from Cahuita to Puerto Vargas, you can take the bus back to Cahuita from Puerto Vargas. The stop is right on the main road. Info: you must leave Punta Cahuita by 2 p.m.

There are 14 family-friendly hiking trails in Limón, with 9 of them being easy and 5 considered moderate. These routes are designed to be enjoyable for all ages and fitness levels.
Limón experiences a tropical climate, so hiking is generally possible year-round. However, the drier months from December to April are often preferred for hiking, as trails are less muddy and wildlife spotting can be more active. Always be prepared for tropical showers, even during the dry season.
Yes, for a very easy and short option, consider the Kelly Creek Ranger Station – Cahuita National Park loop from Cahuita. It's just under 4 km and has minimal elevation gain, making it ideal for families with young children. While some trails might be manageable with robust strollers, many paths in natural parks can be uneven, so a baby carrier might be more practical for younger ones.
Limón is rich in biodiversity! On trails, especially within Cahuita National Park and Gandoca-Manzanillo National Wildlife Refuge, you might spot sloths, various monkey species (howler, capuchin), iguanas, basilisks, and a wide array of birds. Keep an eye out for colorful frogs and butterflies too. The unique intersection of ocean and jungle provides fantastic opportunities for wildlife viewing.
Generally, national parks and protected wildlife refuges in Costa Rica, including Cahuita National Park and Gandoca-Manzanillo National Wildlife Refuge, do not permit dogs on their trails to protect the local wildlife and ecosystems. It's best to leave your furry friends at home when visiting these areas.
Many trails, particularly in Cahuita National Park, offer stunning coastal views where the jungle meets the sea. You can explore pristine beaches and diverse ecosystems like mangroves. While not directly on these specific family routes, the region is home to attractions like Vargas Park in Limón city and the beautiful Playa Bonita. The region is also known for its hidden waterfalls, such as those found near Puerto Viejo.
Yes, several family-friendly routes in Limón are circular, offering a convenient way to explore without retracing your steps. Examples include the Cahuita National Park – Cahuita National Park loop from Cahuita and the Punta Cahuita – Cahuita National Park loop from Cahuita, both providing diverse scenery within the park.
Given the tropical climate, light, breathable clothing is recommended. Long pants and sleeves can help protect against insects and sun. Sturdy, comfortable walking shoes are essential. Don't forget insect repellent, sunscreen, hats, plenty of water, and snacks. A rain jacket is always a good idea, as tropical showers can occur unexpectedly.
The area is highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 4.7 stars. Reviewers often praise the incredible biodiversity, the unique experience of hiking where the jungle meets the ocean, and the accessibility of trails for families. The chance to spot sloths and monkeys is frequently highlighted as a favorite aspect.
Within national parks like Cahuita, you'll typically find basic facilities such as restrooms at ranger stations. For cafes and more extensive amenities, you'll usually need to visit nearby towns like Cahuita or Puerto Viejo, which offer a variety of dining options and services before or after your hike.
For popular areas like Cahuita National Park, there are designated parking areas near the main entrances (e.g., near the Kelly Creek Ranger Station in Cahuita or the Puerto Vargas entrance). It's always advisable to arrive early, especially during peak season, to secure a spot. Some smaller, less formal trailheads might have limited or no official parking.
Yes, many popular areas like Cahuita National Park are accessible by public transport. Buses frequently run between Limón city and coastal towns like Cahuita and Puerto Viejo. From these towns, some trailheads are within walking distance, or you can take a short taxi ride. For more remote trails, public transport might be less direct, requiring more planning.
