Beautiful, demanding hike, e.g. from Ibarra/La Esperanza or with an off-road vehicle to the end of the road. With a bit of luck, there will be no clouds and you will have a view. However, caution is advised, it can be very windy at the top and the weather can change quickly.

An exhausting tour. You should start before 9 a.m. so that you don't get into twilight. We spent nine and a half hours on the road with breaks and dog climbing aids. It goes steadily uphill, on both peaks there are easy climbing areas to be overcome. Parts of the trail are exposed, but manageable even with a little fear of heights. A great mountain! But my knees wouldn't confirm that.

What is the general difficulty of volcano hikes in Imbabura?

Most volcano hikes in Imbabura are considered difficult, often involving significant elevation gain and longer distances. For example, the Imbabura Main Summit loop from San Clemente is a demanding trek. However, there is also a moderate option, the Cubilche Crater Summit loop from Cerro Cubilche, which offers a less strenuous experience.

When is the best time of year to hike volcanoes in Imbabura?

The dry season, typically from June to September, is generally the best time for volcano hiking in Imbabura. During these months, trails are in better condition, and you're more likely to experience clear skies, offering spectacular panoramic views from the summits. However, weather in mountainous regions can be unpredictable, so always be prepared for changes.

Are there any family-friendly volcano hiking options in Imbabura?

While many volcano hikes in Imbabura are challenging, the Cubilche Crater Summit loop from Cerro Cubilche is a moderate option that could be suitable for families with older children or those accustomed to hiking. For younger families, exploring the scenic areas around volcanic lakes like Cuicocha Lagoon or San Pablo Lake offers beautiful walks without the intensity of a summit climb.

What kind of landmarks or natural features can I expect to see along volcano trails?

Volcano trails in Imbabura offer diverse natural features. You'll encounter stunning crater lakes, like the volcanic Cuicocha Lagoon, and panoramic viewpoints overlooking the 'Province of Lakes.' The trails often pass through varied ecosystems within the Cotacachi-Cayapas Ecological Reserve, providing opportunities to spot local wildlife and unique flora. You might also find cultural sites like the El Lechero Sacred Tree and Viewpoint near some routes.

Are there any loop trails for volcano hikes in Imbabura?

Yes, there are several loop trails available for volcano hikes. For instance, you can tackle the challenging Imbabura Main Summit loop from montaña letrero imbabura or the longer Imbabura Main Summit loop from San Clemente. A more accessible option is the Cubilche Crater Summit loop from Cerro Cubilche, which provides a circular route around a volcanic crater.

What should I wear for volcano hiking in Imbabura?

Given the variable mountain weather, it's essential to dress in layers. We recommend sturdy hiking boots, waterproof and windproof outer layers, and warm clothing, especially for higher elevations. Sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen) is also crucial due to the high altitude and strong equatorial sun. Don't forget plenty of water and snacks.

What do other hikers say about volcano trails in Imbabura?

The komoot community rates volcano hikes in Imbabura highly, with an average score of 4.8 out of 5 stars from over 130 reviews. Reviewers often praise the breathtaking panoramic views from the summits, the unique volcanic landscapes, and the sense of accomplishment after completing a challenging ascent.

Are there options for public transport or parking near volcano trailheads?

Access to volcano trailheads in Imbabura often requires a combination of public transport and local taxis or private vehicles. For areas like the Mojanda Lagoons (near Fuya Fuya), you can typically find local transport from Otavalo. For more remote trailheads, such as those for Imbabura Volcano, arranging private transport or a taxi from nearby towns like La Esperanza is often the most reliable option. Parking availability varies, so it's advisable to research specific trailheads beforehand.

Can I bring my dog on volcano hikes in Imbabura?

While many trails in Ecuador are generally dog-friendly, specific regulations can vary, especially within protected areas like the Cotacachi-Cayapas Ecological Reserve. It's always best to check local guidelines for the particular volcano or area you plan to hike. Ensure your dog is well-behaved, on a leash, and that you carry out all waste to preserve the natural environment.

Are permits required for climbing volcanoes in Imbabura?

For some of the higher and more challenging volcanic peaks, especially those requiring technical climbing skills, permits or guides might be necessary. For general hiking trails around volcanoes, such as the loops on Imbabura or Cubilche, permits are typically not required, but it's always wise to confirm with local authorities or park rangers, especially if you plan to venture off marked paths or into sensitive ecological zones.
