Excellent track around the reservoir suitable for most bikes with gravel tyres. The Usk Reservoir, also known as Cronfa Wysg in Welsh, sits at an elevation of 1,006 feet (307 m) in the upper Usk Valley within the Brecon Beacons National ParK. It marks the county boundary between Carmarthenshire and Powys.

A beautiful section the Cycle Across the Beacons route, with the road passing to the South of the Usk reservoir and crossing the River Usk itself.

This ancient Roman Road starts just outside the village of Trecastle, with a steep road climb, hitting 20% in places, before you emerge onto a wide open grassy plateau with amazing views all around. The track is rough and requires good bike handling skills. The majority of the route is rideable: I used 700X40c Maxxis Rambler tyres (no issues), however there is s steep descent toward the end of the section that is significantly more technical, and I chose to walk this short 20-30 metre section. Best experienced on blue sky day.

Ynysfaen is a small quiet and peaceful campsite cited along the Usk river, nestled in the Brecon Beacons. We have grass pitch camping, camper van / tent camping electric pitches, a shepherds hut and a bell tent, both fully furnished with separate kitchens. Free heated electric showers, toilets and washing up area along with use of a fridge freezer. We allow open fires and dogs on pre approval. We are two miles away from the Usk reservoir and Pen Y Fan is a quick 15 minute drive away along with the black mountain range too. We’d love to welcome you to Ynysfaen.
